DUBAI, United Arab Emirates The March, 2000 running of the Dubai World Cup will break its own record for the richest ever run in the history of international horse racing, organizers said in a statement Wednesday. The total purse for the March 25 race will be increased from last year's $5 million to $6 million, and the winning horse will trot away with $3.6 million, up from the $3 million won by Almutawakel last March. The 2-kilometer (1 1-4 miles) race on the Nad al-Sheba dirt track already is billed as the world's richest race.
At its last running, Almutawakel, owned by the Emirates' ruling Al-Maktoum family, beat seven other horses, including American wonder horse Silver Charm. The Dubai World Cup made its inaugural run in 1996, when the legendary Cigar won for a purse of $2.4 million. (AP)
